Understanding Your GPA (Grade Point Average)

Your GPA is a standard way to measure academic achievement. It's calculated by converting letter grades into numerical points, weighting them by the number of credits for each course, and then finding the average.

  • Why is GPA Important? GPA is often used for college admissions, scholarship applications, determining academic honors (like Dean's List), and sometimes by employers during job applications.
  • How is GPA Calculated? Each letter grade (A, B, C, etc.) is assigned a point value based on the GPA scale (e.g., A=4.0, B=3.0 on a 4.0 scale). This point value is multiplied by the number of credits for the course. The sum of these weighted points is then divided by the total number of credits attempted (excluding Pass/Fail courses).
  • GPA Scales (4.0, 4.3, 4.5): Different institutions use different scales. A 4.0 scale is common, often capping A and A+ at 4.0. Scales like 4.3 or 4.5 may assign higher points for A+ grades. Select the scale your school uses for accurate calculation.
  • Weighted vs. Unweighted GPA: This calculator computes a weighted GPA where grades are weighted by credit hours. Some high schools also use a different "weighted" system where AP or Honors courses get extra points – this calculator does *not* account for that type of weighting.
  • Cumulative GPA: This is your overall GPA across all semesters. You can calculate it here by entering your previous GPA and total credits along with your current semester's courses.
  • Pass/Fail (P/NP) Grades: Courses with Pass (P) or No Pass (NP) grades typically do not affect your GPA calculation. They are usually excluded from both the total points and total credits.

Using This Calculator

  1. Add each course from the current semester using the 'Add' button, entering the grade and credits.
  2. (Optional) Enter your previous cumulative GPA and total credits earned before this semester in the 'Calculate Cumulative GPA' section.
  3. Select the correct GPA Scale used by your school.
  4. Click 'Calculate GPA'. The results will show the GPA for the courses entered, and the new cumulative GPA if previous data was provided.
