Understanding BMI
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a widely used screening tool that provides a general indicator of body fatness based on your weight and height. It's calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by the square of your height in meters (kg/m²). This calculator allows you to use either metric or imperial units for convenience.
BMI Categories (WHO Standard):
- Underweight: BMI less than 18.5
- Normal weight: BMI 18.5 to 24.9
- Overweight: BMI 25 to 29.9
- Obesity Class I: BMI 30 to 34.9
- Obesity Class II: BMI 35 to 39.9
- Obesity Class III (Severe Obesity): BMI 40 or greater
Important Considerations & Limitations:
While BMI can be a useful starting point, it's important to understand its limitations:
- It does not distinguish between muscle and fat: Highly muscular individuals (like athletes) may have a high BMI but low body fat. Conversely, older adults or less active individuals might have a "normal" BMI but higher body fat.
- It doesn't account for body composition or fat distribution: Where fat is stored on the body (e.g., around the abdomen) can be more indicative of health risks than BMI alone.
- Age and ethnicity can influence interpretation: Healthy BMI ranges can vary slightly for different age groups and ethnic backgrounds.
Disclaimer: BMI is a screening tool and should not be used to diagnose body fatness or overall health. It's a general guide. For a comprehensive health assessment and personalized advice, always consult with a healthcare provider who can consider other factors like your lifestyle, diet, family history, and other measurements (e.g., waist circumference, body fat percentage).
