About Weight and Mass Units

While often used interchangeably in daily life, mass is the amount of matter in an object, while weight is the force exerted on that mass by gravity. This converter deals with units of mass, which are commonly referred to as weight.

Metric System Units:

  • Kilogram (kg): The base unit of mass in the International System of Units (SI). Used globally as the standard unit for mass.
  • Gram (g): Equal to 0.001 kilograms (1 kg = 1000 g). Commonly used for smaller quantities, especially in cooking and science.
  • Tonne (t) / Metric Ton: Equal to 1,000 kilograms. Used for measuring very large masses, like vehicles or shipping cargo.

Imperial / US Customary Units:

  • Pound (lb): A common unit of mass in the imperial and US customary systems. Defined as exactly 0.45359237 kilograms. Often used for body weight, groceries, etc.
  • Ounce (oz): Primarily the avoirdupois ounce, equal to 1/16 of a pound (approx. 28.35 grams). Used for smaller weights, especially in cooking and postal services. (Note: This is different from the fluid ounce, a unit of volume, and the troy ounce, used for precious metals).
  • Stone (st): An imperial unit equal to 14 pounds (approx. 6.35 kg). Primarily used in the UK and Ireland for measuring body weight.
