About Volume Units

Volume measures the amount of three-dimensional space occupied by a substance. This converter handles common metric and US customary units for liquid and dry volume, essential for cooking, scientific work, and international trade.

Metric System Units:

  • Liter (L): The primary metric unit for volume, commonly used for beverages and many other products worldwide.
  • Milliliter (mL): Equal to 0.001 liters (1 L = 1000 mL). Often used for smaller liquid measurements in cooking, medicine, and science. Equivalent to a cubic centimeter (cc).
  • Cubic Meter (m³): The SI base unit for volume, equal to 1,000 liters. Used for large volumes like water consumption or shipping container capacity.

US Customary Units:

  • US Gallon (gal): Defined as 231 cubic inches, or exactly 3.785411784 liters. Used for fuel, milk, etc., in the US.
  • US Quart (qt): Equal to 1/4 of a US gallon (approx. 0.946 L).
  • US Pint (pt): Equal to 1/2 of a US quart (approx. 0.473 L).
  • US Cup (cup): Standardized measurement unit, typically 1/2 of a US pint or 8 US fluid ounces (approx. 237 mL). Crucial for cooking conversion.
  • US Fluid Ounce (fl oz): Equal to 1/128 of a US gallon (approx. 29.57 mL). Used for beverages and liquid ingredients. Note: Different from the avoirdupois ounce (unit of weight/mass).
  • US Tablespoon (tbsp): Equal to 1/2 of a US fluid ounce (approx. 14.79 mL). Common in recipes.
  • US Teaspoon (tsp): Equal to 1/3 of a US tablespoon (approx. 4.93 mL). Common in recipes.

Note: Imperial units (used in the UK, Canada, etc.) like the Imperial gallon, quart, pint, and fluid ounce differ slightly from their US counterparts. This calculator currently focuses on metric and US customary units.
